Delhi ‘s Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Tuesday assured that the city would not experience flooding this year due to the Yamuna river having a clear channel for its flow.

During an inspection of the ITO Barrage to review the desilting efforts, he noted that the Barrage falls under the jurisdiction of the Haryana government, and last year’s flood in Delhi occurred “due to blocking of its gates.”

“Pilot cuts have been made at the obstruction points. As soon as water flows forcefully through the Yamuna, it will clear away the obstructions, providing a clear channel. As the irrigation and flood control minister, I can confidently say there won’t be a flood this time,” Bharadwaj stated.

Last year, Delhi faced one of its worst flood-like situations in several areas due to heavy rainfall, leading to the evacuation of more than 25,000 people from the affected regions.  (With inputs from PTI)
