As the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate, Manoj Tiwari, readies himself for his third consecutive term in the North East Delhi MP’s office, the saffron party has denied the opposition to open its books once again, according to sources.

Presently, Tiwari has won the constituency with a thumping landslide with 8,21,567 votes and margin of 1,37,066. He was facing off against Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Kanhaiya Kumarm, who is also the former MP candidate from Bihar’s Begusarai.

The popular singer-and-politician’s foray had started with the Samajwadi Party (SP) where he was pitted against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, in the Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency in 2009. Following which, he faced off against Congress’ Sheila Dikshit in 2014, securing a victory as the BJP’s MP candidate from the North East.

Boasting a total of 24,63,159 voters, the constituency has been make-or-break for many politicians, and it has successfully made Tiwari.

The focal issues according to the voters of the constituency were water scarcity, traffic congestion, high crime rate and a severe lack of employment.

Following his defeat, Kanhaiya took to ‘X’ to congratulate his BJP compatriot and the voters for choosing the INDIA alliance to play the role of opposition.

“Finally, many congratulations and best wishes to my opposition candidate Manoj Tiwari ji for being elected MP for the third time. I hope that he will live up to the expectations of the people.

The people of North East Delhi have given India Group the mandate to play the role of opposition. We will follow their orders!” he wrote.

The North East constituency comprises the assembly constituencies of Burari, Gokalpur, Seema Puri, Seelampur, Rohtas Nagar, Ghonda, Karawal Nagar, Babarpur and Mustafabad.

Established after the delimitation exercise of 2008, the constituency is called home by a multitude of people, including migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, who are referred to as Poorvanchalis.
