Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday took a firm stand against arbitrary fee hikes in private schools, announcing that notices have been served to institutions facing complaints from parents. She reiterated her government’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of injustice or exploitation in education, asserting that children’s rights and parental concerns will not be ignored.
“No school has the right to harass parents over fees or remove students unfairly,” Gupta said, adding that schools failing to respond to the notices will face strict action.
The announcement came during a *Jan Samvad* (public meeting), where the chief minister addressed growing concerns about fee-related irregularities. Highlighting a specific case, she said a complaint was received against Queen Mary’s School in Model Town, where parents alleged an unjustified fee hike and the expulsion of students who failed to comply.
Sharing the incident on social media platform X, Gupta said, “Today, a case related to Queen Mary’s School in Model Town came up, where parents complained about unjust fee collection and the expulsion of students.”
In a swift move, the chief minister directed an education department official to initiate immediate action, including cancelling the school’s registration if necessary.
There has been no response yet from the school administration.
One parent, whose daughter studies at the school, claimed the institution had suddenly raised its fees last year. “When we refused to pay the increased amount, the school isolated my daughter in the library and barred her from attending regular classes,” the parent said.
Gupta said she has taken the matter seriously and ordered an immediate investigation. “All schools must abide by the rules and regulations. Any violation will invite consequences,” she warned.
The chief minister stressed that her government is committed to ensuring transparency, equality, and protection of children’s rights in education. “Every child deserves justice, dignity and quality education,” she said.
In recent weeks, several protests have erupted across the capital as parents voiced their frustration over rising school fees, prompting the government to act swiftly in response.
