Full-body scanner trials begin at Delhi airport Terminal 2

The trials for full body scanners have begun at Terminal 2 of the Delhi airport, with their installation at the security checkpoints. The trials will take place for 45-60 days. According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), these scanners can detect non-metal objects, which are usually hard to detect with the conventional door frame metal detector.

The statement by DIAL says that the trials are being carried out on a real-time basis, meaning passengers will pass through the scanner during their security check before they move to the security hold area.

In April 2019, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the aviation security regulator, directed 84 hypersensitive and sensitive Indian airports – one of them being the Delhi airport – to install these scanners by March 2020. The directive suggested replacing the existing door frame metal detectors, hand-held scanners and pat-down searches.

During this period, feedback from all the stakeholders – the BCAS, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), DIAL, and passengers – would be taken, and assessed. The findings of the trial will be shared with regulatory bodies for an assessment, accordingly deciding the further course of action.
