Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on Monday, offering floral tributes and highlighting the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s teachings. The day also marked the remembrance of Lal Bahadur Shastri, a former prime minister, and other revered freedom fighters. Both Gandhi and Shastri, influential figures in India’s history, share October 2 as their birthdate.
In the early morning, Modi paid his respects to Shastri at the Vijay Ghat memorial. Gandhi, known as the Father of the Nation, played a pivotal role in leading India to independence through non-violence. Even on the 154th anniversary of his birth, his global stature as an inspirational figure persists.
Around 8 am, Modi reached Rajghat, the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, where he laid floral petals and bowed in homage. An interfaith prayer service, featuring Gandhi’s favorite devotional songs, was conducted at Rajghat.
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Modi expressed his reverence, stating, “I bow to Mahatma Gandhi on the special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. His timeless teachings continue to illuminate our path. Mahatma Gandhi’s impact is global, motivating the entire humankind to further the spirit of unity and compassion.”
Modi’s post on X also emphasized the global influence of Mahatma Gandhi and called for a collective effort to fulfill his dreams. He encouraged the youth to be agents of change, fostering unity and harmony.
The presence of Union ministers and bureaucrats at Rajghat marked the significance of the occasion. Modi extended his tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri as well, acknowledging the enduring resonance of Shastri’s iconic call, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer).
“His unwavering commitment to India’s progress and his leadership during challenging times remain exemplary. May we always work to realize his vision for a strong India,” Modi posted, underlining the importance of striving for the vision that Shastri had for the nation.
