Govt plans to sponsor Ayurveda start-ups, host global summit: Delhi CM

The Delhi government is planning to host a global summit on Ayurveda and extend financial support to start-ups working in the traditional Indian medicinal system, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday.

Speaking at the All India Ayurvedic Congress in the capital, Gupta highlighted the rising global interest in Ayurveda and underscored India’s leadership in this ancient system of healing. “Ayurveda is gaining popularity around the world, and people from various countries now look to India for authentic knowledge and access to Ayurvedic medicines,” she said.

Gupta credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for establishing the Ministry of Ayush, which she said has played a vital role in mainstreaming Ayurveda and other traditional medicinal systems through progressive policies.

She described the establishment of the All India Institute of Ayurveda in Delhi—modeled after AIIMS—as a significant step in advancing the field.

Calling for a global platform to showcase India’s Ayurvedic heritage, Gupta proposed that Delhi should host an international Ayurveda summit, backed by the state government. “Such a summit would allow experts, practitioners, and academicians from around the world to explore innovations, exchange ideas, and highlight new research in Ayurveda,” she said.

Gupta also announced plans to support Ayurveda-based start-ups, aiming to encourage young entrepreneurs to contribute to the field. In addition, she advocated for promoting yoga practitioners and experts who are working on innovations in holistic health.

Emphasising the importance of preservation and accessibility, she suggested digitising classical Ayurveda texts and knowledge repositories.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the Delhi government currently operates 197 Ayush centres across the city, which provide Ayurvedic, Unani, and homeopathic treatments. These include 55 Ayurveda, 25 Unani, and 117 homeopathy dispensaries. Additionally, three medical colleges and four hospitals in Delhi follow the Ayurvedic system.

As per the 2025–26 budget, the Delhi government has earmarked Rs 275 crore for the development of alternative medicinal systems, with Rs 100 crore specifically allocated for Ayush, she noted.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Gupta praised Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to make Ayurveda accessible nationwide and promote it globally. “People disillusioned by allopathy are turning to Ayurveda for its holistic healing approach. It is our government’s duty to ensure that Ayurveda, homeopathy, and other traditional systems are easily accessible to all,” she said.
