The market famous for computer repairing and hardware at Nehru Place is all set to get a new face as the authorities will be spending Rs 182 crore on its ‘modern transformation.’
As per the report by New Indian Express, Kaushal Kishore, a minister of state in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), informed the Lok Sabha recently that the proposal for the redevelopment of the market from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had been approved by his ministry. The proposal had a budget of Rs 182.13 crore.
The market has turned 50 this year. As per Kaushal, skywalk, multilevel car parking, new toilet blocks, amphitheatre and sculptures will be introduced to enhance the aesthetics and turn the centre into a ‘modern district centre.’
Kishore also stated that three contractors have been appointed by the DDA for executing the work. This was in reply to the questions of BJP MP Upendra Singh Rawat about the details of the plan.
The Urban Development Fund (UDF) would provide Rs 130.23 crore of the total, with the authority picking up the balance. The majority of the Rs 122.98 crore will go toward transportation infrastructure.
The complex had been in a deteriorated state for years due to poor maintenance and encroachment, therefore the market’s renovation was long overdue. Its redesign received preliminary approval in November 2017 and final approval in November 2020, the report said.
The work’s scope includes enhancing transportation facilities like multi-level parking and skywalks, among others. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has also planned to move sewer lines. Buildings’ facades will be improved, and room for 52 kiosks and 40 hawkers will also be added. An amphitheatre, artwork and sculpture installations, and landscaping have all been suggested as part of the construction of social infrastructure.
The implementing agency, DDA, is monitoring the redevelopment work daily, Kishore said. The project is being executed as per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) amongst DDA, Municipal Corporation and Market Association.
