After almost 80 trees in Lutyen’s Delhi were uprooted in the heavy rains and a harsh thunderstorm on 30 May, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, today, launched a drive by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) for pruning overgrown and dead branches of old trees in Connaught Place.

According to the L-G, the exercise, which will ensure less uprooting and falling of trees during storms, was undertaken during off-hours to avoid causing inconvenience to people.

As per the NDMC, since 2015, Lutyens’ Delhi has seen the loss of almost 1,813 trees. Of these, around 300 heritage trees were also lost between 2015-16 and 2021-22.

In 1911, when British architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens was entrusted with the task to plan New Delhi, indigenous tree species such as imli, neem, khirni, jamun, peepal, pilkhan and arjun among others were planted in the NDMC area.
