A total of 59 fatalities resulted from fire incidents in the national capital last year, as per data released by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS).

“The fire department responds to various emergencies such as accidents and drowning incidents for rescue missions. According to our records, 1,266 individuals lost their lives in such emergencies last year,” said DFS chief Atul Garg.

The DFS reported a total of 15,610 fire-related calls in the past year. While 59 individuals succumbed to fire incidents, 689 were successfully rescued, according to the data.

November witnessed the highest volume of fire-related calls at 1,800, leading to eight fatalities during that month.

The data outlines the fatalities per month: 12 in January, two in February, 14 in March, three in April, May, and June respectively, four in July, one in August, three in both September and October, eight in November, and three in December.

Additionally, the fire department successfully rescued 3,533 animals and 3,868 birds in the past year. Over 31,000 distress calls were received, he said.

“Rescuing innocent animals presents significant challenges. The absence of verbal communication intensifies the complexity of rescue operations,” Garg added. (With inputs from PTI)
