The 100th birth anniversary of legendary tabla maestro Pandit Chatur Lal was marked with a large cultural gathering at Safdarjung Tomb, where musicians, diplomats and classical art enthusiasts came together for an evening of performances and remembrance.
Organised by the Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society in collaboration with Delhi Tourism, the event drew an audience of over 2,000 people, reflecting the continuing appeal of the late maestro’s work across generations.
Among those present were singer Daler Mehndi, dancer Sonal Mansingh, and diplomats including Denmark’s Ambassador Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen and Japan’s Ambassador Keiichi Ono.
The evening opened with a devotional performance by Anup Jalota, who presented a series of bhajans that set a contemplative tone for the programme.
The highlight of the event was Brahmaand, a multi-instrumental presentation led by Pranshu Chatur Lal. Featuring Saqib Khan on sitar, Shuheb Hasan on vocals, Atul Shankar on flute and Monis Ali on keyboards, the performance blended classical and contemporary elements, drawing sustained applause from the audience.
Family members and organisers said the event was intended not only as a tribute but also as a continuation of the maestro’s legacy. Curator Shruti Chatur Lal noted that the turnout reflected the enduring relevance of his music.
Pandit Chatur Lal, who died in 1965, is widely credited with introducing Indian tabla to global audiences through collaborations with artists such as Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan. His work continues to influence percussionists and classical musicians worldwide.
The centenary event, organisers said, was part of ongoing efforts to preserve and promote his contribution to Indian classical music.
