The Delhi government will soon make a phone number available to citizens so they can decide whether or not to continue receiving free electricity as of October 1.
Senior representatives of the electricity department, discoms, and other relevant departments met on Saturday under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is also in charge of the power portfolio.
He said that the Delhi government has made the decision to streamline the power subsidy opt-in process. A phone number where customers can leave a missed call or send a WhatsApp message to express their preference for the electricity subsidy will soon be made available. In addition to filling out a form on the bill, Delhi residents would also have the convenience of opting in via a QR (Quick Response) code on the bill or by going to the discom centre.
Currently, around 47,11,176 (more than 47 lakh) families are utilising the power subsidy.
From October 1 onward, all customers will have the option of choosing not to receive the subsidy or to keep receiving free electricity.
The meeting’s agenda focused on streamlining the procedure for opting in and out of the power subsidy provided by the Delhi government.
Sisodia gave the officials the order to streamline the registration process for customers so that any citizen may quickly register their preference with the department without having to go through a drawn-out procedure.
The Delhi government will provide a phone line with power subsidies, it was decided during the meeting.
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister, had declared in May that Delhi residents will continue to receive free electricity. He had also stated that beginning on October 1, consumers might choose not to get the subsidies.
People have recommended over the years that the money be utilised for hospitals and schools instead of giving subsidies to financially secure households.
