Early morning showers on Monday brought much-needed relief from the oppressive heat and humidity across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

However, the rainfall also caused severe waterlogging in several areas of the city, disrupting traffic during peak commuting hours.

Many parts of the capital experienced light to moderate rainfall, with visuals showing waterlogged streets and commuters trudging through puddles under overcast skies. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 12.0 mm of rainfall was recorded at 8:30 AM.

The downpour caused a significant dip in the minimum temperature, which fell to 22.9 degrees Celsius — five degrees below the seasonal average — providing residents with a pleasantly cool morning. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 33 degrees Celsius, with continued rain and generally cloudy skies.

The IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Monday, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall throughout the day.

Humidity levels soared to 100 per cent at 8:30 AM, adding to the muggy conditions.

In a 6:30 AM bulletin posted on X, the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC) in New Delhi stated, “Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorm and lightning (30–40 km/h gusty winds) is likely to occur across Delhi and NCR during the next two hours.”

The weather office has predicted similar conditions to persist over the next two days, with very light to light rainfall likely thereafter.

Meanwhile, Delhiites breathed cleaner air, as the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 81 — a level categorised as “satisfactory” by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The CPCB classifies AQI levels as follows: 0–50 “good”, 51–100 “satisfactory”, 101–200 “moderate”, 201–300 “poor”, 301–400 “very poor”, and 401–500 “severe”.
