School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) will be on board to help Delhi government redevelop the city’s five iconic markets: Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Kirti Nagar and Khari Baoli. A design competition will be conducted by SPA to hire firms, which will give a new look to these markets to make them globally popular.
“The terms and conditions to appoint SPA as competition adviser are being finalised and will soon be placed before the cabinet for approval. The design competition will be organised within a few weeks of its appointment,” a senior government official said in a TOI report.
The government had announced the Rs 100 crore redevelopment project of the five retail markets in the first phase to create a brand around them, which would increase the sales and attract more customers beyond Delhi. The estimated profit generation is valued at 1.5 lakh jobs in five years through promotion, branding and infrastructural facelift.
SPA and the design consultant will conduct a detailed survey of the five markets to identify the number of shops, nature of business, existing amenities, parking space and the scope for creation of more facilities.
“Based on the outcome of the study, the design firms will be asked to come up with their best designs to give a distinct and modern look to these shopping arcades,” said an official. A committee of officials and representatives appointed by the Delhi government conducted a ground survey in Delhi and identified the markets that could be taken up for redevelopment. After shortlisting the markets, the government asked the traders having their shops and businesses in these five markets to suggest the kind of facilities and improvement they wanted to see to make these shopping plazas modern.
“We got several suggestions from the traders such as construction of gates, installing a plaque with the history and uniqueness of markets and unique signage to give them a distinct look. All these suggestions will be part of the scope of work for the architectural and design firms when the competition is organised,” said an official.
