A study for the Hindu women refugees from Pakistan, who are currently residing at Majnu ka Tila, is being conducted by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). The DCW stated, “The Hindu refugees continue to live in deplorable conditions and access to basic amenities like housing, water connection, electricity, toilets and proper means of livelihood are denied to them.”

The DCW shall put forth recommendations based on the study conducted to the Centre and the Delhi government, seeking rehabilitation of these women.

Several women refugees have escaped persecution in Pakistan – forced conversions, abductions, religious attacks, sexual assault and others. The panel has stated that they are living on the banks of the Yamuna River and are facing several issues, which are only becoming severe with the onset of monsoons..

According to the DCW,  because the refugees live in ‘kutcha’ houses and tents, with no access to sanitation facilities, they are forced to defecate in the open, thus putting themselves at risk of various diseases. Additionally, the lack of electricity too has made the area unsafe and susceptible to various crimes. “They have also not been granted citizenship despite several requests”, the DCW said.

Besides conducting the story, notices to various government departments will be issued by DCW to confirm the steps taken by them for resolving issues faced by the Hindu refugees.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal said, “I have met these Hindu refugees at Majnu ka Tila. They are living in the most pathetic conditions. Reptiles often sneak into their kutcha houses. This is a sorry situation and we will be investigating the matter in depth. We will give recommendations to the Delhi government as well as GOI to improve their conditions.”
