With the changing scenario, healthcare sectors adapted to the remote patient monitoring or teleconsultation techniques to prevent the transmission of the viruses.

Teleconsultations were not a common practice around two years ago, but with the arrival of Covid-19 and the imposed lockdowns, it was one of the only available resources. The demand increased by 77% during the pandemic. According to Practo’s (an integrated healthcare company) consultations data from April 2020 to April 2022, 60% of doctors spent more than eight hours on teleconsultations every day during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Late night consultations during the pandemic were increased by 350%. Doctors spent an average of 1.5 hours between 12 am to 5 am.

Dr Alexander Kunavilla, Chief Healthcare Strategy Officer at Practo said, “While the pandemic affected each one of us, I personally understand the effect that it had on doctors in particular. Each doctor prioritized their patient’s well being over everything else during this time.”

Based on the statistics, 35% of doctors in India consulted patients online for more than 12 hours per day providing the consultations to those in urgent need of medical assistance.

The average consultation time ranged from 7:30 minutes as doctors patiently listened to and advised patients on how to deal with Covid-19, while delivering high quality care with CSAT reporting at 90%.

The consultations were conducted in vernacular languages such as Hindi and Tamil due to the rising demand in Tier 2 cities. Dr Kuruvilla added, “The doctors not just invested more time but adapted to the changing needs by meeting people where they were at home and online. All of this was done without compromising on the quality of care provided.”

With effective communication between the doctor and patient, this mode of treatment has gained huge support. As the situation is back to normal now, certain people do prefer teleconsultations to avoid the hassle at hospital.
