The Mayor of Delhi, Shelly Oberoi, announced on Saturday that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken a significant step towards achieving its goal of making the city free of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. A total of 158 locations have been identified across the city for the disposal of C&D waste.

The Mayor’s office revealed that out of these 158 sites, 125 are strategically located in and around different civic wards within the city. This distribution ensures convenient access for residents and construction projects to dispose of their C&D waste responsibly.

To manage and process this substantial volume of C&D waste, the MCD has established five dedicated waste processing plants at key locations, namely Burari, Rani Khera, Shastri Park, Bakkarwala, and Okhla. These state-of-the-art facilities boast a daily processing capacity of 5,500 tonnes and can handle approximately 1.5 lakh tonnes of waste each month. In a year, these plants have the capability to process a staggering 18 lakh tonnes of C&D waste, as emphasised by Mayor Oberoi.

Furthermore, the MCD’s vision extends beyond just cleanliness within the city. It aspires to make the national capital, Delhi, completely free of C&D waste, aligning with the broader environmental goals of the city.

To mitigate the potential environmental impact of these waste disposal sites, the MCD plans to implement preventive measures. Specifically, 20 to 25-foot high protective barriers will be erected around the dumping sites to contain any potential airborne pollutants. Additionally, a regular sprinkling of water will be carried out to minimize dust and maintain air quality in the vicinity of these sites, as stated in the official announcement.

Importantly, these designated C&D waste disposal sites will be accessible to the public around the clock. This availability aims to encourage residents, businesses, and construction projects to responsibly dispose of their waste, contributing to a cleaner and greener Delhi.
