Cancer, long considered a disease of the elderly, is increasingly affecting younger adults, according to recent studies. A report in JAMA Network Open highlights rising cancer rates among people under 50, raising concerns about delayed diagnosis and awareness.

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida showcased two remarkable recoveries of young patients who overcame rare and life-threatening cancers. The hospital building was illuminated in purple, the global colour of cancer awareness, as doctors emphasised the importance of early detection and timely treatment.

Rahul, 20, was admitted with persistent neck swelling, fever, and vomiting. Investigations revealed stage 3 Hodgkin Lymphoma, with less than a 30% chance of survival at the time. Under a structured chemotherapy regimen, follow-up PET-CT scans confirmed a complete response. Rahul continues planned chemotherapy cycles and is currently stable. Doctors noted that without early intervention, he would likely not have survived beyond a year.

Sumit Kumar, 24, experienced persistent fever and abdominal discomfort. Tests revealed elevated blood counts, and a bone marrow biopsy confirmed Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. Started promptly on targeted oral therapy, his condition stabilised without intensive hospitalisation. His prognosis at admission was grim, with less than a 30% chance of survival, and untreated, he may not have lived beyond six months.

Dr Prabhat Ranjan, Consultant – Medical Oncology, said, “Blood cancers in young adults often present with vague symptoms such as fever, swelling, or fatigue, which are easy to ignore. Early evaluation and evidence-based treatment can lead to excellent outcomes, even in advanced disease. Regular screenings and prompt medical attention are crucial.”

Dr Ambesh Singh, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, added, “We are increasingly seeing young patients with advanced cancers due to delayed recognition of early warning signs. Awareness, vigilance, and timely intervention can make a life-saving difference.”

Siddharth Nigam, Facility Director at Fortis Greater Noida, said the hospital’s multidisciplinary approach and advanced diagnostic facilities underpin its commitment to high-quality, patient-centric oncology care.
