The Dhoomimal Art Centre is currently hosting an exhibition featuring the illustrious ‘Calcutta Painters,’ a distinguished collective of artists originating from Kolkata.

This event commemorates a momentous sixty-year journey during which the group has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern art landscape of India.

Established in 1964, the ‘Calcutta Painters’ stand as a testament to visionary artists committed to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. Their dedication to nurturing the growth of art and artists domestically, while making significant contributions to the global art community, remains unwavering.

At the moment, Jogen Chowdhury serves as the president, with Niren Sen Gupta holding the position of vice president within the group.

One of the showing artists is Jogen Chowdhury, who is widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken lines. He has been inspired by the linear Kalighat pat tradition, which is evident in the work exhibited, but his lines are emotive and used to express and suggest the character of the person. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown.

Subrata Ghosh’s series of exhibits centres around different manifestations of the seas, providing a glimpse into his unique perspective on life. It’s as if everything in our lives is adorned with a touch of romance. We often hold onto history, mythology, and societal beliefs. However, when the tide of time washes everything away, we speak of harsh realities. We oscillate between romanticism and reality, trying to find a balance.

Emerging from the vibrant art scene of New Delhi, this esteemed collective has been a cornerstone in shaping the avant-garde art narrative in India. The artistic ethos and approach, initially championed by luminaries like Bijon Chowdhury, Rabin Mandal, Prakash Karmakar, Nikhil Biswas, continue to resonate even after six decades.

In essence, ‘Calcutta Painters’ has forged a legacy of unwavering dedication and artistic excellence, leaving an indelible mark on the canvas of India’s cultural heritage.

When: 11Am to 7 pm, March 4 -16
