Print to paint

What: Nature Morte has on display an online exhibition of works spanning 40 years by the artist Rm Palaniappan. ‘Grammar of Randoms’ brings together over 30 works on paper and canvas dating from 1980 to 2020, showing the artist’s development from printmaking to painting. Born in Devakottai, Tamil Nadu in 1957, Palaniappan’s early years were spent considering an occupation in the sciences, however, science, mathematics and astronomy found their way into a lifelong art practice instead. Palaniappan’s prints from the 1980s are characterized by a plethora of information combining notations, marks, cyphers, and signs into densely layered graphic ensembles. With the addition of graphic elements and hand colouring, Palaniappan subverts the multiplicity inherent in printmaking, rendering each work unique. Through these works, he outlines deeper considerations of time, space, and movement, and attempts to transcend the linearity of the physical world as experienced by him.

When: April 2 – May 31

Tipsy tale

What: Recipient of the NBR Award for Top Foreign Films – Whisky Galore! can be screened from home right now. A warm and funny 1949 portrait of a Scottish island thrown into panic when the wartime allotment of whiskey runs out. Conveniently, an American ship loaded with 50,000 cases of Scotch flounders just offshore, and the islanders go to the rescue. Alexander Mackendrick’s direction of the ensemble cast is impeccable. No one character is allowed to dominate, yet each character is indispensable. A classic tale of gentle anti-authoritarianism.

When: May 10 – 16
