What: Presented by Galleryske ‘Islands’ brings together three bodies of work by artist Tara Kelton, each casting a unique lens onto the idea of the landscape as it is mediated through digital technologies. Developed during the past year, as the Covid-19 pandemic reshaped one’s relationship to the environment, these works reflect on representations of the “natural” within our increasingly virtual existences. In the installation ‘Homeward’, a portable projector sits atop a robot vacuum cleaner, playing a looped video from “virtual nature walk” DVDs (that normally play on screens attached to treadmills). The Roomba wanders across the floor with the video projected on the wall before it as it moves and the idealized virtual landscape and the physical space of the gallery collapse. In her series of drawings, Flowers, Kelton draws from her visits to the popular VR platform “Sansar”.

What: Catch award-winning contemporary cinema from across Europe, including a special biodiversity line-up of Indian films by CMS Vatavaran as part of the European Union Film Festival 2021. The special section will take you on a journey through hitherto unexplored ecosystems, highlighting the rich diversity of nature and wildlife in regions from the Himalayas and the Western Ghats to the plains of Central Europe. Particularly relevant given present environmental and climate crises, these films offer a unique cinematic lens to show how communities across the EU and India are working towards the protection of biodiversity hotspots.

What: Vadehra Art Gallery’s participation in the Art Basel OVR: Portals features London-based artist Faiza Butt. titled After All This Is Won, it is a powerful body of ceramics, ink drawings and works on polyester film developed by Butt over the last five years responding to and in some cases predicting the sudden decline of touch as an errant or unwanted gesture of contact outside the social fabric due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. For Butt, the necessities of an essential human experience may be transferable to a digital realm where they are even experienced intensely, but the simulations cannot supplant our primal sense of fragility that motivates us to search for stable love, warmth and embrace in our relationships and surroundings.
