An exhibition titled ‘Equus & Other Stories’ by artist M Narayan is set to open this Saturday at Bikaner House. Curated by art historian Uma Nair, the show features paintings inspired by horses, polo, and rural India.
Originally from Karnataka and now based in Pune, Narayan has been painting for over 40 years. His fascination with horses and polo has led to a striking series of works that depict speed, strength, and motion. Using charcoal strokes, bold colors, and expressive compositions, he captures the energy of a live match.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: the Equus Series, featuring paintings and drawings of horses and polo in both colour and monochrome; the Kerala Series, inspired by Narayan’s visit to Kerala, facilitated by Amitabh Kant, which captures the region’s landscapes and traditions; and the Karnataka Series, showcasing scenes from his home state, including a portrait of Kempamma Devi in both color and monochrome.
In the exhibition catalogue, Amitabh Kant praised Narayan’s ability to bring rural India to life through his art. Curator Uma Nair highlighted his detailed studies of Kathakali and Theyyam, emphasizing their expressions, music, and storytelling traditions. She also noted his ability to portray daily life and rituals in Karnataka.

Narayan described his work as a mix of observation and participation. “Artists are both insiders and outsiders. My art is grounded in the game of the moment and in the deep connection between horses and riders,” he said.
