Thapar Gallery is presenting Many Modernisms: Figuring the New Artistic India, an exhibition bringing together works by major figures of twentieth-century Indian modernism, including Jamini Roy, Amrita Sher-Gil, K K Hebbar, M F Husain, F N Souza, Ram Kumar, Bhupen Khakhar, Sadanand Bakre, A Ramachandran, Badri Narayan, Satish Gujral, Sohan Qadri, B Prabha, Haku Shah and Himmat Shah, among others. The exhibition is on view until October 15 at Thapar Gallery, The One, Kapashera Estate, New Delhi.
The exhibition looks at Indian modernism as a diverse and evolving set of artistic practices rather than a single movement or style. It explores how artists responded to a society undergoing social and cultural change, drawing on different histories, experiences and ways of seeing.
The works move between village and metropolis, tradition and international modernism, engaging with themes such as landscape, mythology, faith, the human body, labour and everyday life. The exhibition also traces the movement from figurative works addressing social realities and emotional experiences to abstraction exploring meditation, cosmology and colour.
Surface, line and sculptural form play an important role across the exhibition, with works exploring ideas of memory, displacement and interior worlds. Together, they reflect the range of artistic approaches that shaped modern Indian art across generations and geographies.
Ashish Thapar, Director, Thapar Gallery, said the exhibition does not attempt to define Indian modernism through a single style or period, but instead brings together different artistic practices that responded to a changing society and transformed the visual language of twentieth-century India.
Many Modernisms: Figuring the New Artistic India brings these varied artistic languages and approaches together to present a broader view of how artists imagined and represented a changing India.
