
The Sahitya Kala Parishad, Government of NCT Delhi, in collaboration with the Ghalib Memorial Movement, is set to host a series of events in tribute to the life and legacy of the legendary poet Mirza Ghalib. ‘Remembering Ghalib’ will be a celebration of his extraordinary contributions to Urdu literature and Indian culture, taking place from December 15 to 19, 2024. The three-day commemoration will include a candlelight procession, poetry recitations, and a cultural program, bringing together scholars, poets, and art enthusiasts to honor Ghalib’s timeless influence.
The celebration will kick off on Sunday, December 15, 2024, with a moving candlelight procession from Town Hall, Chandni Chowk to Ghalib’s Haveli in Ballimaran. The procession, which begins at 5:30 PM, will be inaugurated by Saurabh Bharadwaj, Minister of Art, Culture & Languages. The event will also feature tributes by prominent dignitaries, including Suresh K Goel (Former DG, ICCR), Firoz Bakht Ahmed (Chancellor, MAANU), Badrudduja Siddiqi Najmi, and Uma Sharma, followed by a Mehfil-e-Ghazal by Imran Khan.

On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the celebration will continue with a Mushaira dedicated to Ghalib at the India Islamic Cultural Centre, Lodhi Road, starting at 6:30 PM. Renowned poets such as Moien Shadab, Ejaz Popular Meeruthi, Nadeem Shaad, and Shahid Anjum will recite ghazals inspired by Ghalib’s poetry.
The final day of festivities, Thursday, December 19, 2024, will feature a special cultural programme at the India Islamic Cultural Centre at 6:30 PM. The evening will include a mesmerizing Dance Ballet, “Shama Har Rang Mein Jalti Hai Sahar Hone Tak…”, choreographed by Uma Sharma, based on Ghalib’s poetry. This will be followed by a brief narration on Ghalib by Pavan K Varma, a renowned author, diplomat, and former Member of Parliament.
These events will serve as a fitting tribute to a poet whose words continue to captivate hearts and minds across generations. As Ghalib’s poetry transcends time, the celebration offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with the essence of his work, reflect on his profound influence on Urdu literature, and appreciate the cultural richness he left behind. ‘Remembering Ghalib’ is not just a commemoration, but a revival of the immortal spirit of one of India’s most celebrated literary figures, organisers of the event said.
