Celebrated artist Jogen Chowdhury’s solo exhibition, Roop Aroop, opened at Dhoomimal Gallery on April 26. Curated by Abhishek Kashyap, the show runs until May 23 and offers visitors a fresh look at Chowdhury’s influential body of work.

Known for his fluid lines, minimal use of colour, and deeply expressive figures, Chowdhury has long been a key figure in Indian contemporary art. His paintings often explore emotions such as vulnerability, loneliness, power, and desire. Born during the Partition, his personal history has shaped a style that speaks to both personal and wider social experiences.

Speaking about the exhibition, curator Abhishek Kashyap said, “Jogen Chowdhury captures the broader experiences of life through his drawings. His work reflects the world we know but often shows it in new, powerful ways.”

The opening evening featured a screening of The Moving Line, a documentary film on Chowdhury’s life and work, produced by Abhishek Kashyap and directed by Debajyoti Roy. Guests also enjoyed an art installation by Raihan Rajiv Vadra at the Sculpture Court and a musical performance by the Nizami Brothers.

Several well-known figures attended the event, including Shabir Hussain, Vikram Mayor, Amit Kumar, Ashish Garg, and artists Vijendra Sharma, Sanju Jain, Neerja Peters, and Nupur Kundu.

Uday Jain, Director of Dhoomimal Gallery, said, “We are honoured to host this solo exhibition. Jogen Chowdhury’s art is full of meaning, created with simple lines and thoughtful detail.”
