Swaraj: Revisualising India’s Political History

Swaraj: Revisualising India’s Political History, an exhibition curated by cultural historian and archivist Neville Tuli, will open at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, on August 12 and continue until August 16. Presented by the Tuli Research Centre for India Studies (T.R.I.S.), the exhibition explores India’s political journey through art, archives and visual culture.

Drawing from the extensive collections of T.R.I.S., the exhibition brings together Modern and Contemporary Fine Art, Popular Art, photography, film memorabilia, rare books, prints and visual, textual and audio archives. The works and archival material examine themes of political self-rule, democracy, national identity and public memory.

Rather than presenting history through conventional political narratives, Swaraj looks at India’s evolving political consciousness through different forms of visual and cultural expression. The exhibition brings together artworks and archival material to explore how political events, ideas and identities have been documented and remembered.

Curated by Neville Tuli, the exhibition offers a multidisciplinary view of India’s political history, bringing together art and archival collections to examine the relationship between visual culture and the nation’s changing political landscape.

The exhibition will open with a special preview on August 12 at 6 pm.
