A solo exhibition of artworks by Dipen Bose (1921-1964) titled “The invigorating masterstroke”is set to grace the Creative Art Gallery from 16 September to 24 September at 6 Hauz Khas Village.
“Art is not a reality show, not even a translation of it. However, art may revitalise a life-scape by drawing on experiences or creating another version of life lived in a beloved world of thought and imagination. These works reveal either joyful ideas or a life we aspire to, which may be fiction but is not unattainable,” says the host, Paramita Sarkar.
A self-taught artist with no academic training in art, Bose was inspired by his grandfather Nagendra Bose, and began painting after leaving his work at the Central Excise Service in Calcutta in 1947. The Indian government gifted his picture to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1953. He also published art-related essays in newspapers and magazines.
Bose’s artworks included local materials such as tempera, a restricted palette of bright hues, lead pencils, and watercolours. He painted beautiful landscapes, historical subjects, portraits, and scenes from everyday country life. The simplicity and elegance of refined figures are evidently soothing. “I take honor in presenting a Solo Exhibition of one of the most prominent artists of Neo Bengal Art- Dipen Bose. It’s been an earnest effort at Creativity Art Gallery and to bring together these collections and a deep insight into his personal life,” says Sarkar.
Bose’s style of work is Inspired by Indra Dugar, which moves towards traditional Indian Art, French Impressionism and Chinese Art. He sought inspiration from jain and Kangra paintings, far Eastern Art and even impressionism, resulting in a style similar to Bengal School.
