A minor has been detained by the Delhi police after the SUV he was driving rammed into a Swiggy agent’s motorcycle, leaving the latter fatally injured.

The accident took place at D B Gupta road in the wee hours of last Friday when the deceased, Rahul Kumar, was on his way to meet his friends.

Kumar, a Swiggy employee from Gole Market, was travelling with his cousin.

Around 1:20 am, according to the police, they received a PCR call regarding the accident. The accused minor and his friend – who is a foreign national – abandoned the car at the spot and ran away while Kumar succumbed to his injuries at RML hospital.

The police first reported a crime in accordance with IPC sections 279 and 337 (rash and negligent driving). Later, the officers went to the owner’s residence, where the accused, a student of class 11, was detained after information about the car was collected from the transport department as part of their investigation. To the current FIR, IPC Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) has been added.

In light of the recent accident, a senior police official stresses on the need for citizens to understand the gravity of the situation. “Even in this case, it was revealed in the investigation that the driver was a minor and a student of class 11. We get a lot of similar cases where minors are involved. They belong to the big and prosperous families, however there’s nothing to be proud of in committing a crime,” he states.

The investigation has also revealed that the accused’s father is a big name in the real estate market and was recently arrested in a multi-crore scam.

“Since the matter involves a minor, the case is to be handled by the Juvenile court and the procedures are to be followed. We are trying our best to take care of the city’s problems but the citizens too need to cooperate,” the official concludes.

Delhi has touched the mark of being one of the most accident prone cities of India. The city alone has registered a total of 2300 accidents in the first half of the year 2022. With several measures undertaken to control the traffic and the rising cases of accidents, the situation hasn’t changed a lot.
