A three-day festival celebrating the life and legacy of Zakir Hussain will be held from March 27 to 29 at Sunder Nursery. Organised by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA), the programme brings together performances, talks, film screenings, and an exhibition to reflect on the maestro’s enduring contribution to music.
Titled Ustad Zakir Hussain: The Way Forward, the festival will feature curated performances by percussionists Yogesh Samsi, Ranjit Barot, and Anantha R. Krishnan, all of whom have collaborated closely with Hussain. Each evening will explore different dimensions of rhythm through live concerts, alongside visual presentations and conversations.
A key highlight of the programme is an exhibition of photographs by Dayanita Singh, offering an intimate visual archive of Hussain’s life on and off stage. Singh, who began her photographic journey documenting the maestro, will also deliver a talk titled Travelling with Zakir Hussain, reflecting on her long association with him.
The festival will include film screenings that trace personal and artistic aspects of Hussain’s journey. These include works by his daughter Anisa Qureshi and a screening of The Speaking Hand by filmmaker Sumantra Ghosal, followed by discussions. A session titled Stories of Zakir by Mujeeb Dadarkar will offer further insights into the tabla maestro’s life and legacy.
The programme also features Saaz, a special performance by Chitrahaar Live led by Pavithra Chari, highlighting Hussain’s contribution to music in Indian cinema. The concluding evening will present Mellow Rhythms, curated by Anantha R. Krishnan, along with a Bharatanatyam performance by Shobana Chandrakumar.
Conceptualised by sound engineer and collaborator MT Aditya Srinivasan, who worked closely with Hussain across several projects, the festival seeks to explore how his innovations in rhythm continue to influence musicians across generations.
