There is no God in the Temple

Gallery Threshold presents a solo exhibition by Shaurya Kumar ‘There is no God in the Temple’. The title of the exhibition has been drawn from a poem by Rabindranath Tagore, which echoes the sentiments of the people of our country who in the recent past found their shrines and altars emptied out by looters or destroyed by extremists and iconoclasts.

In this solo exhibition in Delhi, Kumar presents sculptures, paintings and prints. His works addresses the world of objects and non-objects and questions the role of individuals and institutions that assign them their new meaning. Reacting to the philosophy and practice of collection, his work looks through objects, within and beyond, and questions the purpose they serve; it probes subject-object relationship in a particular time and context.

He uses diverse sets of tools, media, techniques and processes including print, drawing, sculpture and installation, to engage us in a phenomenological understanding of an object. The sculpture, ‘A Case of the Broken Hand’ made of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), which includes 40 pieces with varied dimensions reflect the act of touching and gazing – the tactical and visual engagement between the devotee and the divine which is critical for religious and spiritual realization. Manifestation leads to the latent, and each is incomplete without the other, if not entirely meaningless.

“Much of my work, thought and research in recent projects has been a response to this subject-object dialog and to the contemporary state of ruinous affairs. My work addresses the loss of aura when the original is transformed in its meaning and narrative due to transposition, marginalization and destruction caused by neglect, greed, looting and iconoclasm”, says Shaurya Kumar.
