Woven Into Being is a group exhibition that explores the possibilities of perception and multi-sensorial visuality through metamorphoses of forms and mediums. The exhibition will be held at Latitude 28 from April 22 to May 22 and will feature works by five emerging artists — Al-Qawi Nanavati, Revati Sharma Singh, Reyaz Badaruddin, Shalini Dam, and Veena Advani.
The works of the five artists featured in the exhibition challenge the boundaries of perception and invite the viewers to engage with their senses in new and innovative ways.
Al-Qawi transforms her late mother’s belongings into woven textile creations working with ideas of repetitive motifs. Calligraphy in her work becomes a catalyst in creating a secret language to write letters to her mother.
Revati Sharma’s permutations of grains are central to her works symbolically looking at the theme of hunger and abundance.
Reyaz Badaruddin revisits the functional and art through transmuting the objects like terracotta pots and vases into unconventional shapes. He plays with dimensionality and texture and converts the 3D sculpture into 2D shapes on his canvases.
Shalini Dam experiments with ceramic works by changing their form to create optical illusions. An interactivity is generated as the viewer moves around the work.
Veena Advani makes the surfaces of her works, abstract landscapes of distinct textural materials from textiles to beads turning flowing masses of surreal topography.
“The material aspect of these works demand an inspection which is not just visually stimulated but hints towards a sensation of tactility. The artists through their distinctive practices employ textural elements in asymmetrical patterns in their creations to redefine the relationship between form, medium and sensation,” says the curator.
