Delhi skies a feast for the eyes before winter arrives

While Delhiites face a blinding sun between April to almost September, they also witness a burst of colours in the sky during the span. From bright azure with white cotton clouds to glorious pink, the Delhi sky becomes a sight for sore eyes before the winter pollution arrives.

With bone-chilling winter comes the lethal PM2.5 pollutants shrouding the Delhi sky with toxic smog, choking its residents.

On Wednesday, the national capital received light showers with a forecast that ruled out a possibility of heavy rainfall until August end. High humidity added to the discomfiture of the city residents.

The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 35 degrees Celsius. The minimum and maximum temperature readings on Friday are likely to settle at 27 degrees Celsius and 36 degrees Celsius respectively, according to the IMD forecast.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was recorded in the “satisfactory” (74) category around 9:15 am, data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”.

Around 64 per cent of Delhi’s winter pollution load comes from outside the capital’s boundaries, with “burning of agricultural waste” and “burning for heating and cooking needs” being the major sources, according to a new study released in June this year.

Transport (12 per cent), dust (seven per cent), and domestic biomass burning (six per cent) are the major sources of locally-generated pollution city in winter (October 15 – January 15), the study by Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) said.
