JD Tytler school loses recognition status after failing to admit EWS children

It has been alleged that JD Tytler school in New Rajendra Nagar did not admit economically weaker section (EWS) candidates, and also didn’t provide such students with the promised free stationery and uniform. Hence, the state assembly’s SC/ST welfare committee has recommended withdrawing the school’s  recognition. 

The order will come into effect on 1 April 2023.  A nearby government school will take in the existing students.Vishesh Ravi, the chairman of the SC/ST welfare committee stated that despite Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal giving instructions to give admission and stationery to EWS children as per rules, many schools didn’t comply. “The committee had recommended to the education department that strict action should be taken against schools not following the rules. In this context, the recognition of the school has been withdrawn”, Ravi stated.

Due to fewer general category admissions, the Director of the directorate of education Himanshu Gupta, on 16 July this year, issued a recognition order to the school which had requested DoE to exempt it from admitting EWS students. However, DoE rejected this recognition order.

Another order was issued when the school failed to admit EWS students despite the rejection from DoE. Instead, the school responded to the rejection on 18 July, giving details of 41 admissions allotted to it. The school also said it would provide books and uniforms to the EWS children.

In the meantime, the Action Committee, which is an association of private recognised schools, stated that the committee order was not in line with the Supreme Court order passed on 19 July this year. 

“The Supreme Court had passed a stay on all proceedings and the order passed by a division bench of Delhi High Court directing all EWS seats to be filled up. The department is bound to face contempt of court. The order shall be brought to the notice of the Supreme Court on September 1, 2022,” said Kamal Gupta, its advocate, while speaking with TOI.

Patriot tried getting in touch with the school authorities, however, received no response.
