As many as 30 people, including last year’s coach Abhay Sharma, have applied for the post of Delhi’s senior cricket team coach for the 2023-24 season.

According to the list, a copy of which is with Patriot, former international cricketers Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Sharma, Rajesh Chauhan, Parwinder Awana, Ajay Ratra, Devang Gandhi, Gursharan Singh and Bhupinder Singh Sr have applied for the post.

The candidates will be called up for interview on August 18, 19 and 20.

The selection will be done by the newly-formed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Nikhil Chopra, Surinder Khanna and Anjali Sharma – the latter two replaced Gursharan Singh and Reema Malhotra recently.

“We will only recommend our choices to the DDCA, who will take the final call. But everyone is invited to the interview without prejudice,” said Surinder Khanna, member of the CAC.

The CAC will also decide on selectors for senior and junior men’s teams, coach for men’s junior teams, assistant coaches for men’s senior and junior teams, selectors for women’s teams, coaches for women’s senior and junior teams, team manager, physiotherapists for men’s and women’s teams and trainers for men’s and women’s teams.

Interestingly, former India batsman Surinder Amarnath, who is already 74, has also applied for the role of a senior selector. He is the oldest among the applicants.

However, there is an ongoing debate within DDCA whether the age cap meant for administrators – 70 years – should be applied to selectors and coaches.

Besides Amarnath, former international cricketers Maninder Singh and Bhupinder Singh Sr have filed in their names for the role of senior selector.

Mayank Sidana, who was part of the senior selection committee last season before it was disbanded, has also thrown his hat in the ring for the senior selector’s role.
