Delhi crashed out of the national one-day tournament for Vijay Hazare Trophy after losing their match against Assam by 25 runs in Kolkata on Wednesday.

This was Delhi’s fourth loss in seven matches and capped off a poor outing in the premier domestic one-day tournament.

Batting first, Assam could make only 250 before being all out in 49.4 overs. Skipper Nitish Rana was the top wicket-taker for Delhi with three wickets for 33 runs.

Rishav Das, who bats at No. 3, held Assam’s innings together with an unbeaten 93 off 92 balls. He scored 11 fours and two sixes and milked bowlers Yogesh Sharma and Mayank Yadav the most.

Opener Rahul Hazarika scored 61 and added 58 runs with Das for the second wicket.

Hazarika had added 77 for the first wicket with Kunal Saikia (36).

In response, Delhi folded for just 225 in 49 overs. Himmat Singh top-scored with 84 runs, hitting four fours and three sixes. Skipper Nitish Rana had the next best score with 34 off 47 balls.

At one point in time, Delhi were reduced to 120 for five in 26 overs. It was always going to be an uphill task after that.

In a previous match on Monday, Delhi had gone down to Jharkhand by five wickets. Delhi were in a commanding position, after scoring 259 and reducing the east zone side to 106/4.

But the bowling, which comprised India internationals Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini, failed to make inroads – Ishant went wicketless in the game – as Jharkhand coasted to victory in 48.5 overs.

Delhi finished fifth in Group B with Assam taking the top honours.
