Australia’s Steve Smith became the 15th cricketer to reach 10,000 Test runs on Wednesday during the opening Test against Sri Lanka. Needing just one run to reach the landmark, he achieved it on his first ball, guiding a delivery from Prabath Jayasuriya for a single in Galle.

Fourth Australian to the Feat

Smith is now part of an elite group, joining fellow Australians Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, and Steve Waugh. The all-time record remains with India’s Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 15,921 Test runs. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was the first to cross the milestone in 1987.

Acknowledge the Applause

The 35-year-old, standing in as Australia’s captain, acknowledged the crowd’s applause. Speaking to 7Cricket, he said, “Fortunately hit that one in the gap, so nice to get that one away… Nice to tick that off.”

Leading in Cummins’ Absence

Smith is captaining the team for the two-match series as Pat Cummins opted out due to the birth of his second child. Smith boasts an outstanding average of over 55 across 114 Tests, with 34 centuries since his debut in 2010.

From Leg-Spinner to Batting Great

Starting as a leg-spinner batting at number eight, Smith transformed into one of the finest Test batsmen. He is regarded as part of the modern “Fab Four” alongside India’s Virat Kohli, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, and England’s Joe Root.

Steve Smith is one of the finest batsmen in modern cricket, known for his unorthodox technique and incredible consistency in Test matches. Starting his career as a leg-spinner, he transformed into a batting powerhouse, becoming Australia’s go-to player in crucial situations. With an average of over 55 in Tests and more than 10,000 runs to his name, Smith has cemented his place among the game’s greats. A former Australia captain, he has played key roles in Ashes battles and major international series. His ability to adapt, play long innings, and dominate bowling attacks makes him a standout performer in world cricket.
