Redmi Note 14 Pro Review: Premium features, minor drawbacks

Redmi Note 14 Pro Review: The Redmi Note 14 Pro, launched in December 2024, is Xiaomi’s latest addition to the mid-range smartphone market. It offers a blend of premium features and performance at a competitive price point.

Design and Build

The device boasts a sleek design with a vegan leather back panel, providing a premium feel. Its glossy, metal-like plastic frame adds to the aesthetic appeal. The centrally aligned quad-camera bump on the rear, while adding to the design, prevents the device from lying flat. The phone is lightweight and ergonomic, though the rear panel’s texture does not completely prevent slipperiness.

Display

Equipped with a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display, the Redmi Note 14 Pro offers a resolution of 1220×2712 pixels. The display is sharp and vibrant, supporting a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth visuals. It also features HDR support, including Dolby Vision for compatible streaming platforms, enhancing the viewing experience. Protection is provided by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, ensuring durability.

Performance

Under the hood, the device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Ultra processor, paired with 8GB of RAM. This combination delivers smooth performance for everyday tasks and moderate gaming. However, during resource-intensive activities like 4K video recording with background apps running, performance may dip slightly. Gaming at medium settings is smooth, but higher resolutions or frame rates can cause occasional stutters.

Camera

The Redmi Note 14 Pro features a triple camera setup:

Primary Camera: A 50MP Sony LYT-600 sensor with an f/1.5 lens and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). It delivers sharp and vibrant images in well-lit conditions and performs decently in low-light scenarios.

Ultra-Wide Camera: An 8MP sensor offering a 120-degree field of view. However, it struggles in low light, capturing less detail and clarity compared to the primary sensor.

Macro Camera: A 2MP sensor that fails to produce meaningful results, making it feel like an afterthought in the camera array.

The 20MP front camera delivers decent performance, capturing sharp selfies with a pleasing background blur in portrait mode. For video recording, the primary camera supports 4K at 30 fps, while the ultra-wide is limited to 1080p. The front camera records at 1080p and 60 fps but lacks 4K capability.

Battery Life

The device houses a 5,500mAh battery, providing sufficient power for a full day of moderate usage. It supports 45W wired fast charging, with the included charger capable of powering the device to 80% in about an hour. However, compared to competitors, the charging speed could be faster.

Software

Running on Xiaomi’s HyperOS, based on Android 14, the interface offers several features but includes numerous pre-installed third-party apps. While some can be uninstalled, native apps like Music and GetApps cannot be removed and send frequent notifications, which can be intrusive. Ads are present in some areas, and the interface lacks intuitiveness in certain aspects.

In conclusion, priced from Rs 24,999, the Redmi Note 14 Pro offers a vibrant display, solid performance, and good battery life, making it a strong contender in the mid-range segment. However, the underwhelming performance of the ultra-wide and macro cameras, along with software bloatware, may be drawbacks for some users. Overall, it remains a solid option for those seeking a feature-packed mid-range smartphone.
