World Cup 2023: Cricket enthusiasts surprised by the low turnout during the first match in Ahmedabad

The highly anticipated World Cup 2023 began today, with England taking on New Zealand in the opening match at the biggest cricket stadium in the world — Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. It being the first match on cricket’s biggest stage, fans expected a good footfall.
However, they were surprised by the low turnout at the stadium where multiple stands were empty. Cricket fans took to social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), with pictures and videos of empty seats.
Former cricketer Virender Sehwag suggested giving free tickets to school and college students to deal with the low attendance:
