Tremors were felt across Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) early on Tuesday morning, triggering momentary panic among residents in some areas.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed that an earthquake of magnitude 3.2 struck the region at 6:00 am, with its epicentre located in Faridabad, Haryana.
The quake originated at a shallow depth of 5 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, with coordinates recorded at 28.29° north latitude and 72.21° east longitude. While the tremor was relatively mild, the shallow depth may have made it more perceptible in nearby areas, especially in high-rise buildings.
There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage to property, officials said. However, some residents took to social media to share their experiences, describing a light shaking of furniture and brief swaying of ceiling fans. In several housing societies, early risers momentarily stepped out of their homes as a precaution.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the Delhi-NCR region, which falls under Seismic Zone IV — considered one of the most high-risk zones in India. Although Tuesday’s quake was not strong enough to cause structural damage, seismologists regularly advise preparedness due to the region’s vulnerability.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) reiterated that no emergency response was required, but urged residents to remain aware of basic earthquake safety protocols, especially in multi-storey buildings.
No disruptions to public services or transport systems were reported, and normal activities resumed quickly after the brief tremors.
