5 historic eateries in Delhi that predate Independence

Even before Independence came to India, there were places holding together Delhi’s cultural identity and captivating taste buds. These historic eateries were established before the midnight hour of August 15, 1947. Full of flavour and culture, these places are a must-visit as Delhi celebrates 80 years of independence.

Old Famous Jalebi Wala

Known for its rich, flavourful jalebis, fried in ghee and served hot, this establishment dates all the way back to 1884. Its jalebis are a favourite among those who enjoy freshly served, piping-hot desserts. Soaked in khandsari sugar syrup, which is infused with spices, the dessert is a speciality of this family-run business.

Karim’s

Managed by the fourth generation of the family in 2026, the original Karim’s was established in 1913. While the restaurant gained fame for its Mughlai tastes, it has now expanded both its menu and its branches. It now stands as one of the most popular options for mutton dishes, rolls and biryanis. Despite its menu now being available on online platforms as well, the original Karim Hotel is still a pilgrimage site for food lovers.

Wenger’s

Established in 1926 by a Swiss confectioner, the multi-storey establishment was bought by the Tandon family in the 1940s. Since then, it has introduced North India to global confectionery and bakery items, including Swiss chocolates and French baguettes. The bakery still retains its colonial looks and is a hotspot in central Delhi for bakery items.

Kwality

In 1940, the owners of Kwality established it as a casual spot during World War II, famous for its hand-churned ice cream and cassatas. After Independence, however, it turned into an Anglo-Indian dining spot. It still maintains its charm with wooden interiors and old photographs. It is now famous for its Pindi Chana and is considered a wonderful place for North Indian comfort food.

United Coffee House

United Coffee House started in 1942, after Lala Hans Raj Kalra felt a lack of intellectual salons. People from all backgrounds soon started gathering here, debating political futures over pots of coffee. It served as a meeting place for artists, journalists, politicians and freedom fighters, all gathering during the turbulent times that led up to Partition.
