A woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing a bag containing gold jewellery worth around Rs 20 lakh and Rs 60,000 in cash that a commuter inadvertently left on a Delhi Metro train, an official said on Friday.
Police said the incident took place on June 28 when the complainant was travelling with her daughter from the Kohat Enclave Metro station to the Kashmere Gate Metro station.
“While getting off the train at Kashmere Gate around 8 pm, she left behind a bag containing old gold jewellery worth around Rs 20 lakh and Rs 60,000 in cash,” said the police officer.
An e-FIR was registered after the complainant reported the incident.
Police said CCTV footage showed another woman, who was travelling with her daughter, noticing the unattended bag after taking a seat near it. Instead of informing Metro authorities or depositing the bag at the Lost and Found office, she allegedly took it, police said.
A team launched an investigation and analysed CCTV footage from more than 25 Metro stations across multiple corridors to trace her movements.
Police said after sustained technical surveillance, CCTV analysis and field enquiries, the accused, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was traced and apprehended.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to taking the unattended bag. At her instance, police recovered the stolen old gold jewellery worth around Rs 20 lakh and Rs 60,000 in cash.
