Delhi Police has seized 223 kg of illegal firecrackers from a vehicle in outer north Delhi and arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly possessing and transporting them without a valid licence or permit, an official said on Sunday.

The action was taken on August 26 during routine patrolling in Mukundpur, the official said.

According to the police, the patrol team noticed a man sitting inside a car loaded with several plastic sacks. On checking the vehicle, the sacks were found to contain Diwali-style bombs and other firecrackers.

“The driver, identified as Rishab, a resident of Mukundpur, was questioned about the firecrackers. He could not produce any licence or permit authorising their possession or transportation. An FIR was registered on August 27,” the officer said.

Police said further investigation was underway to ascertain the source of the firecrackers.

In Delhi, manufacturing, procuring, stocking, selling and bursting traditional firecrackers is illegal under the Environment (Protection) Act.
