While no deaths by dengue have been reported in the national capital so far, the total count of cases reported so far this year stood at 134 till 25 Jun, according to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
The number of cases recorded last year were substantially low as compared to this year. While only 34 cases were reported between 1 January and 25 June last year, this year, Delhi recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April and 30 in May. It recorded 23 more cases this month till 25 June
The number of cases for the same period was 20 in 2020, 22 in 2019, 30 in 2018 and 55 in 2017, the report said.
Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, but the period may stretch till mid-December.
Civic officials said dengue cases were being recorded earlier this year due to congenial weather for mosquito breeding. They have stated that while vector-borne diseases like dengue see most number of cases between July and November, the period may stretch till mid-December this year – a huge concern for the national capital.
Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the national capital, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths, the highest since 2016.
Since Delhi’s worst dengue outbreak in 1996, the city had witnessed a massive outbreak of dengue in 2015 with the number of cases crossing 10,600 in October alone.
