Ambasariya singer Sona Mohapatra is all set to premiere her documentary Shup Up Sona on Zee5 on 1 July. Directed by Deepti Gupta and produced by Mohapatra, the documentary is a feisty portrayal of a singer surviving in a deeply patriarchal society.
Mohapatra is known for her unapologetic takes on various issues. The documentary shows her struggles through many battles, both personal and political. In an 85-minute narrative, Mohapatra deals with issues like moral policing of her clothes, body and creative style. The film also speaks about the representation of women in the music industry.
Sharing the news of its release on digital platforms, Mohapatra wrote on Instagram, “This film is also a window into the Indian music eco-system & its politics apart from being a showcase of my musical roots & inspirations. This is my call out to my sisterhood to own their own narrative & one to the brotherhood to become better allies.”
After its debut at the Mumbai Film Festival in 2019, the documentary had a stellar run at many film festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). It also won the Best Documentary Award at the IndieMeme and Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). Another addition in the bag of many esteemed awards for the documentary was the National Film Award for Best Editing. Mohapatra was also honoured with the Impact Docs Award in the US for her work in the film.
