After Delhi HC’s rap, AAP says MCD works halted due to non-formation of standing committee

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), following criticism from the Delhi High Court regarding the lack of book supply in MCD schools, stated on Friday that the municipal body’s operations were halted due to the absence of its standing committee.

The AAP highlighted that the issue of the standing committee’s absence, which serves as the primary decision-making entity of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court, as per a statement released by the party.

Alleging that the Lieutenant Governor (LG) unlawfully appointed aldermen (nominated councillors), thereby preventing the formation of the standing committee, the AAP held the LG responsible for obstructing MCD’s functioning.

The Delhi LG’s office did not immediately respond to AAP’s allegations.

On Friday, the Delhi High Court rebuked the city government concerning the failure to provide books to students in MCD schools, criticizing the continuation of Arvind Kejriwal as chief minister despite his arrest, which, according to the court, prioritizes political interests over national welfare.

The court accused the Delhi government of pursuing power appropriation, following remarks from the government’s counsel that the matter required approvals from Kejriwal, who is in custody related to an alleged money laundering case tied to the 2021 excise policy.
