‘Aur lado aapas mein’: Omar Abdullah takes dig at Cong, AAP on Delhi election results

Delhi election results: As early trends from the Delhi Assembly elections indicated a decisive lead for the BJP, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took a swipe at INDIA bloc allies AAP and Congress, suggesting that their rivalry was self-destructive.

Sharing a GIF on social media platform X, the National Conference (NC) leader quipped, “Aur lado, jee bhar ke lado, samapt kar do ek dusre ko” (Fight… fight to your heart’s content, finish each other off). His remarks came as the BJP surged past the halfway mark, setting the stage for its return to power in Delhi after over 26 years.

Despite contesting the Lok Sabha elections as part of the INDIA bloc, the Congress and AAP chose to go solo in the Delhi Assembly polls. Their campaign turned adversarial, with both parties labelling each other as the BJP’s “B-team.”

Last month, when Congress and AAP announced their decision to contest separately, Abdullah had expressed scepticism about the INDIA bloc’s cohesion, stating that its lack of clarity on leadership and direction raised doubts about its purpose beyond the general elections.

The AAP and Congress have been critical of each other while contesting the Delhi election, where they have been rivals since AAP’s foray into politics in 2013. During the campaign too, they had frequently traded barbs and targeted each other’s leadership.

Unlike Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP), which actively backed AAP, the NC maintained a neutral stance on the Delhi elections. Abdullah distanced himself from the rift between Congress and AAP, stating that the matter did not concern him. However, he had previously voiced disappointment over the bloc’s lack of coordination, absence of meetings, and uncertainty over its leadership.

Earlier, Abdullah had urged a strategic course correction for the INDIA bloc, warning that continued infighting would render the alliance ineffective. “If we continue on this path of division, it won’t bode well for the future of the INDIA bloc,” Omar cautioned.
