Delhi Election Results: BJP’s Marwah stuns Manish Sisodia in Jangpura

Delhi Election Results: In yet another major setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lost in the Jangpura constituency to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Tarvinder Singh Marwah by a margin of 675 votes.

According to the Election Commission, BJP’s Marwah secured 38,859 votes, while Sisodia received 38,184.

Jangpura has been an AAP stronghold since the party first contested elections in 2013. Incumbent MLA Praveen Kumar oversaw improvements in electricity and water services, but many residents felt neglected in areas such as sanitation, roads, and public engagement. Kumar was denied a ticket this time, with the party instead fielding Sisodia, a senior leader known for his work in education and infrastructure.

Congress had put forward its senior Delhi leader and former Mayor Farhad Suri, who finished a distant third. Sisodia banked on AAP’s decade-long track record in education and healthcare, but Marwah, a former three-time MLA and Jangpura resident, capitalised on local discontent.

Marwah’s appeal as a ‘local leader’

Marwah accused Sisodia of being an “outsider” unfamiliar with the constituency’s day-to-day challenges. Known for being accessible to residents, he also targeted Sisodia over his alleged involvement in the now-scrapped liquor policy.

Sisodia was released from Tihar Jail on August 9 after 17 months in custody.

Marwah had always contested Jangpura as a Congress candidate before switching to the BJP in 2022. He previously won from the constituency on a Congress ticket in 1998, 2003, and 2008.

Conceding defeat, Sisodia said, “We will analyse.” Meanwhile, Marwah told journalists, “Party workers fought well; we all worked hard. People have supported us.”

Jangpura’s diverse voter base

A key constituency in South East Delhi, Jangpura reflects the stark contrasts of urban India, where affluence and poverty coexist. Well-connected by major roads and railway lines, it continues to grapple with infrastructure and governance issues.

The constituency includes upscale localities like Jangpura Extension alongside densely populated Jhuggi-Jhopri (JJ) clusters, highlighting deep socio-economic inequalities. While affluent residents enjoy stable electricity and water supply, slum dwellers struggle with basic amenities.

In the 2020 elections, AAP won Jangpura with 50.88% of the vote.

Issues faced by residents

Among the major concerns in Jangpura are poor sanitation, deteriorating roads, and a lack of parking and public toilets.

Shopkeepers in Jangpura Extension complain about inadequate facilities. Mukesh Gupta, an electronics shop owner, said, “The market toilet has been shut for over five years. We’ve complained several times, but no action has been taken.”

Kundan Prakash, a paan shop owner, added, “Sewer lines are clogged, and dirty water floods the market streets. It’s bad for business.” Another shopkeeper noted, “Despite promises, garbage keeps piling up on the roads. This should not happen in such a reputed market.”

Road conditions are another source of frustration. Anushree Sharma, a resident, said, “We haven’t had power cuts in years, and we don’t pay water bills, but the MLA’s lack of engagement is disappointing. The roads are still broken.”

The JJ clusters opposite Lajpat Railway Colony house over 5,000 families, many from South India. These settlements suffer from narrow lanes, stagnant water, and a lack of clean drinking water and sewage systems.

CK Malali, a long-time resident, voiced his frustration: “Conditions here have worsened, and politicians ignore us except during elections. We are just voting for them.”

However, some residents acknowledged progress. Harry, another resident, said, “AAP built toilets, which was a long-standing issue. Free electricity and water have helped many families.”

Commenting on the election results, resident Anushree Sharma recalled an incident where Praveen Kumar failed to attend a community event. “We invited him for a Jagran last year, but he never showed up. The MLA needs to interact with people more.”
