Delhi Assembly Election 2025: Cops nab 2 for attempting to cast fake votes in Kasturba Nagar

Delhi Assembly Election 2025: An alleged attempt to cast fraudulent votes was reported in the Kasturba Nagar assembly constituency of Delhi, according to Delhi Police sources on Wednesday.

Quoting sources news agency ANI reported that two individuals tried to vote illegally at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in the Andrews Ganj area but were apprehended by the police. They are currently being interrogated.

“Two persons were caught at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in the Andrews Ganj area of Kasturba Nagar while attempting to cast fake votes using slips. Both are under police questioning,” said Delhi Police sources.

The Kasturba Nagar constituency is witnessing a three-way electoral contest among the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress. The Congress has fielded Abhishek Dutt, BJP has nominated Neeraj Basoya, while AAP’s candidate is Ramesh Pehalwan. Further details on the case are awaited.

Meanwhile, voter turnout picked up after a slow start in the initial hours of polling. By 11 am, the overall voter turnout in the single-phase Delhi assembly elections stood at 19.95 per cent, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Among the districts, North East Delhi recorded the highest turnout at 24.87 per cent, followed by Shahdara at 23.30 per cent, while Central Delhi saw the lowest at 16.46 per cent. Other turnout figures include South West (21.90 per cent), New Delhi (16.80 per cent), East (20.03 per cent), North (18.63 per cent), North West (19.75 per cent), South (19.75 per cent), South East (19.66 per cent), and West (17.67 per cent).

Polling for all 70 assembly seats in Delhi began at 7:00 am on Wednesday under tight security. A total of 699 candidates are contesting in this election, with key constituencies including New Delhi, Jangpura, Kalkaji, Okhla, Mustafabad, Bijwasan, Kasturba Nagar, Greater Kailash, and Patparganj.

This election is crucial for AAP, BJP, and Congress. AAP aims to retain power, BJP is striving for a comeback after 27 years, while Congress hopes to regain a foothold after failing to secure a single seat in the last two elections. AAP, which currently holds over 60 seats in the 70-member assembly, is campaigning on the achievements of its previous term.

The votes will be counted on February 8.
