Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will hold a meeting on Monday, a day after his government issued a flood warning amid heavy rain as the Haryana government released more than one lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna River from the HathniKund Barrage in Yamunanagar.
The meeting will take place at the Delhi Secretariat and will be attended by senior officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control department as well as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The India Meteorological Department reported that Delhi experienced 153 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. This is the highest amount of rainfall recorded in a single day in July since 1982.
As a result, the Delhi government issued a flood warning on Sunday after Haryana released over one lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna river from the Hathnikund barrage.
The irrigation and flood control department announced that this was the initial warning, with a discharge of 1,05,453 cusecs of water at 4 pm.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) stated that the water level in the Yamuna river in Delhi is rising and is expected to surpass the danger mark of 205.33 meters by Tuesday.
According to the CWC’s flood-monitoring portal, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge reached 203.18 meters at 1 pm on Sunday, close to the warning level of 204.5 meters.
The CWC predicts that the water level will further rise to 205.5 meters between 11 am and 1 pm on Tuesday. (With inputs from PTI)
