Delhi Election Results 2025: Delhi Chief Minister Atishi submitted her resignation to Lt Governor V K Saxena on Sunday, one day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a significant defeat in the assembly elections.
Atishi, who had retained her Kalkaji seat, handed her resignation to Saxena at Raj Niwas, as confirmed by officials.
In the February 5 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a strong return to power in Delhi after more than 26 years, securing 48 out of 70 assembly seats. The AAP won 22 seats, while Congress failed to win a single seat.
Following the election results, BJP leaders stated that the party would stake its claim to form the government next week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his foreign visit.
Atishi had become Chief Minister in September of the previous year after AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal resigned amidst corruption allegations.
The BJP’s victory marked a historic comeback, ending a 27-year-long wait to regain control in the national capital, overthrowing AAP. With a landslide victory, the BJP secured 48 seats, while AAP’s representation shrank to just 22 seats. The Congress, for the third consecutive term, did not win a single seat.
The election outcome caused shockwaves in Delhi, as nearly all AAP cabinet members lost their seats. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was defeated by BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma by 4,089 votes in the New Delhi seat. Former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia lost by just 675 votes to Tarvinder Singh Marwah in Jangpura. Notably, the BJP won the New Delhi seat for the first time since the 2008 delimitation.
Sisodia’s seat was changed by the party due to anti-incumbency. He previously contested from Patparganj, where BJP ended a 32-year-long jinx by winning the seat in the 2025 Assembly elections. In Greater Kailash, BJP’s Shikha Roy defeated Saurabh Bhardwaj by 3,188 votes, while in Shakurpur Bhasti, BJP’s Karnail Singh defeated Satyendar Jain by a staggering 20,998 votes.

The victory in Greater Kailash marked the first time the BJP had won this seat since AAP’s inception, where Bhardwaj had held a stronghold for three terms. The same trend was observed in Shakurpur Bhasti. Other senior AAP leaders, including Durgesh Pathak and Somnath Bharti, also faced defeat.
