Over 500 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) have been registered in the lead-up to the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi, an official stated on Thursday. The violations were reported between January 7, when the MCC came into effect, and January 22.

During this period, a total of 17,879 individuals were arrested under various provisions, including the Excise Act, as part of a concerted effort to maintain law and order, according to an official statement.

In preparation for the polls, Delhi Police ramped up surveillance at border checkpoints and launched crackdowns on illegal activities, including the smuggling of arms, liquor, and drugs. The police recorded 504 cases of MCC violations, seized 270 illegal firearms, and confiscated 372 cartridges during the intensified vigilance drive.

The statement further revealed that authorities seized ₹4.56 crore in cash and 37.39 kilograms of silver during the same period, underscoring the scale of illegal activities being tackled ahead of the elections.

Polling for all 70 assembly seats in the national capital is scheduled for February 5, with the vote counting set to take place on February 8.
